Media Release: Annual art project for primary school children spotlights biodiversity in the backyard

The Environmental Art Project presented by Mundaring Arts Centre Inc. provides an annual opportunity for primary school children to creatively engage with local and global environmental issues, whilst developing their own positive message about protecting the earth. The theme for 2022, Backyard Biodiversity challenges students to look closely at nature and discover, observe and monitor the animals that live in their local area.

A series of three short video tutorials staring Angela Rossen Artist and Biodiversity Educator have been released for students, teachers and parents to learn about what biodiversity means in native gardens and the soil, thanks to support from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. The local artist, who’s practice “aim[s] to grow reconnection to and deeper understanding of the abundance, variety and sheer ingenuity of the natural world” also demonstrates some tips on how to translate learnings from the Mundaring Arts Centre education resources and videos, into an engaging artwork to be submitted.

Now in its 21st year, the Environmental Art Project is open to all Western Australian primary school students in years 1-6, with all artworks entered showcased in a virtual exhibition. Selected entries from students who reside or go to school in the local government areas of project supporters, Shire of Mundaring and City of Swan, will be transformed into exciting public outcomes and displayed at Mundaring and Midland Junction Arts Centres. Both the selected students and their schools receive vouchers towards purchasing art and environmental resources, with additional highly commended and People’s Choice prizes awarded.

The entries that are selected from Shire of Mundaring will be printed on largescale banners celebrating their message about supporting Backyard Biodiversity and hung for a year in the Memorial Rose Gardens outside the Mundaring Village Shopping Centre. City of Swan selected entries will be transformed into a walking trail around Weeip Park to encourage visitors to discover the biodiversity of the newly developed park.

The Environmental Art Project encourages both children and adults to discover the animals that live in their backyard and school grounds and find out what they can do to encourage biodiversity. Entries close 5pm Wednesday 26 October 2022. To find out more visit mundaringartscentre.com.au/eap
